If you could have One Gift from God, would you take it for granted? Consider today’s Holy Nougat

“And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭22‬:‭19‬-‭20‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Unleavened bread was a central staple of the Passover, owing to its genesis in the slave roots of the first Passover. Then, the circumstances necessitated traveling light, given the need for speed in the escape from Egypt. It symbolized God’s provision even in desperate times. Coming out of the forty years, I’d agree that there is scope for seeing this unleavened bread as a symbol of ‘ritual purity’, as there was no yeast in the dough.

It is in the latter we find the direct link to Jesus. As the Bread of Life, Jesus was pure and sinless, so we see that the other Passover feasts pointed to Jesus, our Savior. They might also have thought of manna, which was miraculously provided in the wilderness, as it was also a source of daily bread. Of course, Jesus is also our Provider, our very Present help in trouble (see Psalm 46:1). And after His death, the disciples probably had memories of their own experiences with Jesus helping them out of trouble.

When Jesus took the bread to share with the disciples, He offered a new meaning to the old understanding of Passover. We too ought to find new meaning in the ritual, as we receive liberty from death into life with Jesus. In our Bread of Life, we receive the way of escape from sin to become the Righteousness of God (see 1 Corinthians 5:21). We are now children of the Promise, no longer slaves!

All because of One Gift – Christ’s body. Do we take the Gift for granted?

May all we seek be found in Christ
