Psalms 110:1 NIV‬

[1] The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”

Enemy as Footstools 1

Quoted by Jesus during His trial to repudiate the Sanhedrin, it is believed to be a prophetic psalm of David in reference to the Messiah. You may be like me who’d struggled for some time to get the gist of this prophetic word. Or you might already understand it. As we read it now, what does it evoke for us, and does it offer encouragement for today?

On the surface, we note that this is a snippet of a conversation between two deities. But there seems to be a hierarchy: one is instructing and offering support to the other. The instruction is straightforward. Stay with me, and I’ll make you overcome your enemies.

And yet, it says more. David refers to one of the deities as YHWH, or the Sovereign Lord. This is the God of Moses, the One Who met Moses, the runaway leader, and commissioned him for service. YHWH is All Mighty, All Powerful and totally in control. YHWH is the Mighty Warrior, the Lord Mighty in battle, the King of Glory described in Psalm 24, and our Creator.

The Great I AM, YHWH, is speaking to Adonai, the Lord, David’s Lord. This may be a bit perplexing, as David preceded Jesus in physical birth. That however is in the natural realm, for Jesus Himself explained in John 8, ‘… before Abraham was, I am.’ This indicates that He preceded David. Moreover, it indicates that what David wrote was prophetic, as David’s affirmation of Jesus as Lord was futuristic, not contemporary.

We may also recall that there is some significance to the right side. This was a position of privilege and power. It was a position accorded an equal, or to someone singled out for honour. We’re told in Romans that the ascended Jesus is at God’s right side (as indicated in this prophetic verse), where He intercedes for you and me. Thus, when James and John asked to sit at Jesus’ right side, Jesus warned that it wasn’t His decision to make, AND that it carried great tribulation (see Mark 10:35-45). An invitation by YHWH for Adonai to sit at God’s right hand tells us that through Resurrection and Ascension Jesus reverted from being divinely human and ‘little lower than the angels’ (see Psalm 😎, to sitting once again at the divine council making judgements alongside the Creator.

This is the Jesus Who calls us, the Lord Whom we follow. He is exalted above every name by virtue of His obedience to YHWH. In doing so, He was setting the example for us. He became human to show us that obedience is possible and to secure our place in Heaven. May we acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God forever.
