Recently I met a woman who was extremely late for a presentation she was making. She gave her apologies and attributed her delay to Murphy’s Law. A few days later, she was late again, and turned up exactly 5 minutes after the meeting ended. Someone told her, ‘Please. You have to divorce Murphy!’ Maybe we should have introduced her to Titus.

“But God, who encourages those who are discouraged, encouraged us by the arrival of Titus.” 2 Corinthians 7:6 NLT
It was a Murphy’s Law* kind of season in the Corinthian church. Everything that could go wrong had, to the extent that things were not very healthy between them and Paul. And the issue seems to have weighed heavily on Paul’s mind.
Enter Titus.
The church received Titus most cordially, so much so that he was convinced of their desire to restore relations with Paul. Now, I suspect that the Corinthians knew EXACTLY WHO Titus was. I am confident that the church/leadership was strategic and exercised wisdom in their hospitality to Titus. And that’s to be noted and commended. It’s a strategy many of us ought to/have employed in our interactions with others.
So what about Titus?
Whether Titus was following Paul’s directive in meeting with the Corinthians, we cannot entirely verify, in terms of the fullness of what he was commissioned to do. But we know that he was operating under God’s direction, by the power of God’s Spirit!
He received the hospitality extended.
He represented Paul’s concerns to the extent that the Corinthians insisted that (or even repented) Paul should hear their story, while conveying their desire to maintain good relationships.
He articulated this and by God’s Spirit, broke the impasse between Paul and the Corinthian Churches.
He was commended for adding Sonshine to a dreary season. For Paul’s evangelistic team seemed to have also encountered Murphy in Macedonia. They were at the point of discouragement. And, by God’s timing and Spirit, Titus returned safely to offer a twofold encouragement.
