A few years ago I learned a very important life lesson from a Jamaican proverb. It says, ” … (Yuh)Tek yuh tongue tie knot wha yuh teet’ cyaan pull”. How often do we speak long before we engage our brains and find ourselves in a pickle? Sometimes learning the meaning of the proverb isn’t enough … Many of us choose to learn by painful experience.
Disbelieve me? Ask Herod. He’s the protagonist in today’s Holy Nougat™.
… so he promised with a vow to give her anything she wanted. Matthew 14:7 NLT
It wasn’t enough that he was guilty of adultery. It didn’t matter that he harbored murderous thoughts toward John the Baptist. He seemed now to be wavering on a very slippery slope of self destruction. What with accepting his niece/stepdaughter’s gift of dance which was so beguiling, Herod began his own descent into murder, madness and mayhem.
For, having been wonderfully entertained alongside his guests, Herod was prepared to forfeit up to half his kingdom to his stepdaughter. What a mess! Yup. He tied a rather huge knot, and only a beheading or repentance could undo it.
Before we move to condemn Herod, let’s first begin with self-evaluation:
Have we also been guilty of trying to cover up sin in our lives? If so, let’s get rid of the weights which beset us …
Or, have we made rash promises, with exceptional negative repercussions?
