Today’s Holy Nougat invites thoughts on leadership. Bon appétit!
“Uriah the priest did just as King Ahaz commanded him.” 2 Kings 16:16 NLT
It sounds innocuous right? The priest was following the king’s orders. But if it was as simple as that, perhaps the names would not have been emphasized. For, names matter. Even a letter’s difference mattered. Ahaz (whose name means Yahweh has held), was not quite as terrible as Achab (aka Ahab, whose name means uncle or father); but he committed his fair share of blasphemy. And this act of obedience was one such.
As the priest of God, to whom was Uriah’s allegiance due? The king or God? But for whatever reason; security, weakness or willfulness; the man of God chose the king’s way. His name means Yahweh is my light. So God’s light bearer was following the leadership of the one who held God’s power; and neither was actually taking their cues from Yahweh. How unfortunate for them and the people! For there was no one to hold them accountable.
Now let’s Fast forward a few centuries. Most Christian leaders are not under the thumbs of our national political leaders, but we are also challenged by the temptations which seek to lure us. Please keep praying for us. Men and women alike, we have headlined many a time for the wrong kind of news.
As we pray for our leaders – religious and political – perhaps we might pray for God’s mercy, for wisdom in decision making, for the will to be godly leaders and for moral and political integrity.
But let’s also pray for ourselves; for we are each called to lead, to be light bearers for God and face our own moral and political crossroads. May our decisions also be fueled by God’s Spirit, rather than ought else which detracts.
