But Ruth replied, “Go not urge me to abandon you, to turn back from following after you. Wherever you go, I will go; and wherever you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Ruth 1:16
What must Naomi done as a mother-in-law to warrant such devotion and transformative grace? Her son’s were not necessarily great boys (check the meaning of their names), but through the years her life must have positively impacting both daughters-in-law resulting in their affection and devotion.
It may have been her gentle heart, her willingness to include them in her life at their worst moments, her positive outlook on life even after her sons and husband died.
Whatever it was, it speaks eloquently of her role in their lives as mother, essential woman. I love that as mother-in-law her mothering is still affirmed.
Today I join writers of old in recognizing all mothers, those who have birth and those who shared in nurturing. I thank God for their graciousness and pray that those who come behind them recognize their faithfulness. Enjoy this Mother’s Day knowing that El. Shaddai, the many-breasted One, is even more gracious and provides for our every need.
