Being the child of an important person can be both a bane and a blessing. On the one hand, we receive perks, but there’s also the burden of public expectations – imposes by ourselves, and by others, or even by our parents. This applies, whether the parent is a community figure or a superstar. Today’s Holy Nougat speaks to this truth.
“Because you are children who obey God, don’t live the kind of lives you once lived. Once you lived to satisfy your desires because you didn’t know any better. But because the God who called you is holy, you must be holy in every aspect of your life.” 1 Peter 1:14-15 GW
Now before we get ruffles about Social Expectations or Responsibilities, can we allow one thing to sink in – we are Children of God!!!!! Yesiree! That’s who we are, and that’s how God sees us! Regardless of what our earthly parent/s do/es; We. Are. Children. Of. God! That’s like the Ultimate Celebrity Parent!
If that’s how we feel; could we be brats for a bit and brag on our celebrity parent for a bit. Just consider the various names and attributes of God: Creator, Eternal, Holy One, Most High, Lord, Provider, One Who Sees us, God of our fore parents, our Healer, Pillar of Fire, Love, our Help, our Rock, our Deliverance, our Healer, our Caretaker (Shepherd), our Righteousness are but a few. That’s the blessings of God as mother and father. We can celebrate our celebrity God every day!
As indicated earlier, this status carries expectations. This means we ought to reflect some of God’s attributes (not the titular aspects at this point) just as children reflect traits of their birth and/or socializing parents in physical and other features.
When we lived outside of the knowledge that we are children of God, it was understandable if we did not live by God’s attributes. But now we are wholly in the household of Faith, and everyone knows it. So it’s time to Live it. And to Live Out Loud so that God’s joy is made complete IN us.
We live as celebrity children, not to make others jealous; not for fear of judgement (and Yes, it will happen; sometimes unfairly); not for fear of God punishing us; But because we know that God’s Got Enough Love for Everyone and we know the world can also benefit from being God’s celebrity children. Especially when we demonstrate the same character traits. Can you imagine what that would be like?!
How do we do that? Tomorrow, God’s willing, we will begin to explore.
