Nougat 10

“Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭11:28‬ ‭NLT‬‬

This nougat is part of a longer pericope (segment) known by many around the world. Although we are familiar with it, we might not have opted to take Jesus up on His offer. Or, we might wait until things go completely awry … (been there! sigh). I received the nougat recently and offer us to hear Jesus speaking to our spirit now; “I’ve got this, if you’d like me to.”

Allow the words to sit with us a while. Do you have something for Jesus to cover? I sure do. It doesn’t matter if others think it unimportant. Jesus seems to have been still responding to the concerns of John the Baptist, shared by his disciples, who had already left.

John, the fearless prophet of God, and Jesus’ earthly cousin, had been falsely convicted. He was losing hope. He’d sent his disciples with a question that Jesus discerned as weariness. Having conveyed a response to John, Jesus was speaking to the masses. He wasn’t in a debate with the Pharisees, Sadducees or the Teachers of the Law. Just ordinary folks with similar concerns as John did about God hearing their pleas.

Some were common laborers; peasants even. And most were not enjoying the abusive legal and socio-economic system of Roman rule. With those words, what Jesus offered them, and us today, was a break from drudgery, hard physical work or emotional turmoil.

So hear Him speaking once again; calling us by name, whisperingly insistent:

”Come! I know you and understand your problem, and I’m willing to help.”

Whether we are rich, poor, stressed, free, grieving, ill, or even indebted; Jesus offers a chance to let go. And He offers us a break from whichever burden we bear – whether physical, economic, emotional, social, spiritual, or mental. Even if we are bearing someone else’s burden.

Hear Jesus speaking healing rest once more; ” I seriously want to help. Yes you are tired of feeling alone. I’m with you now, if you’ll let me! Come.”

Will we take the offer of rest? (Or share with someone who needs Him?) Just as we are. Come.
