It is said that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. How about you? Are you ‘tough’? When confronted with the storms of life, when Life begins Lifing, how do we respond? Consider today’s Holy Nougat
“A little while before morning, Jesus came walking on the water toward his disciples. When they saw him, they thought he was a ghost. They were terrified and started screaming … The men in the boat worshiped Jesus and said, “You really are the Son of God!”” Matthew 14:25-26, 33 CEV
What’s Our Response?
Twelve disciples; One storm
Multiple responses: Terror; Screaming; Bailing out; Doubt; Worship – and that’s what the story shared. I suspect that the other disciples might have been surprised that Peter left them in the boat; or maybe they watched to see if they should also bail out.
The disciples’ emotional responses confirm their humanity. They were scared of the ghostly figure, and while the scream could not save them, it must have released some of the fear.
And what was going on in Peter’s mind – was he really bailing out on his team, and testing the spirit. Because he pitched his question to the unrecognized Jesus.
When all was right again and Jesus was with them in the boat, they all worshipped Jesus. They recognizes Him as the Son of God.? But nothing had changed, had it? It was still 12 men – plus Jesus. And the storm had abated. They were no longer terrified.
Our circumstances are somewhat different from theirs – when the storm comes, it is highly unlikely that we see Jesus in the flesh, walking on the water. The more critical question is – how do we react? Do we panic? Are we threatened by what we (can’t) see? Are we terrified by the threat of the unknown?
Who are we in the story? Is there need to change our response to Life’s Lifing?
