Hello
In Jamaica, where I’m from, today is Emancipation Day. It is a public holiday, observed by the English Caribbean in recognition of freedom from the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Ironically, it is now coming on the heels of the international day for recognition of persons who live under the yoke of bondage even today.
Accidental?! I think not. But it certainly is a critical point at which to segue into today’s Holy Nougat™
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave of sin. John 8:34 NLT
There’s that pesky word again … Slave
Not one of those committed by others against us, but one committed by ourselves. Somewhat involuntary – we’re born into sin – yet definitely a breech of our rights as citizens of God’s world. Unfortunately, this is a crime against humanity being perpetrated on a regular basis.
If we become slaves upon committing a sin, then we ought to be examining the different issues which would seek to hold us captive. The natural inclination is to point fingers at those ‘obvious’ sins and their slaves, the sinners; but I’d encourage us to identify our own sins – the little white lies (still a lie; regardless of the color or size), the petty thievery (still stealing; and perhaps more pervasive and binding), the sharing of news (aka ‘gossip’; so many of us guilty, including myself), the critical spirit (what became of “judge not lest you are also judged”) … and I’m certain there are a few I’ve omitted from the line-up.
Having so done, perhaps we might wish to repent of them (thus extricating ourselves from the yoke); AND allowing Christ to take control.
The fact is, in parting company with those sins, were likely to be taking on the yoke of Christ. But, before we even think of grumbling or complaining, let’s remember that Jesus’ yoke is easy and His burden, light. Now that’s a yoke I’ll embrace any day!
So happy Emancipation Day to you, whether you’re a person of African descent via the Transatlantic Slave Trade or not. For in Christ, we can celebrate Full Free!
God bless you and thanks for joining us!
