God Assures us we are Not Alone

I enjoy playing peek-a-boo with children. It is heartening to see how that action affords both of us the opportunity to see the other in a new, friendly light. The game suggests that even if the child’s eyes are closed, s/he is still visible and seems to inspire cheer in the child. The game reminds me of what God assures us of all the time. Especially when our eyes are closed, we are not alone. Consider Today’s Holy Nougat.

Psalms 34:4 CEB

[4] I sought the LORD, and he answered me. He delivered me from all my fears.

Emmanuel: God delivers Us

In the peekaboo game, there is a sense in which the one whose eyes are closed/covered is searching for security. Seeing the other person engaged in watching suggests coverage and security that reminds me of our Nougat. When used with the words, ‘peekaboo … I see you’, I’m reminded of God’s protective presence in our lives.

Self-Check

In tumultuous times, do we seek after God’s presence like a child playing peekaboo?

Application

Siblings, be assured that God sees us and anticipates our call. When we feel forsaken, when we are in a good place, and when we’ve got everything going right, God sees us. This isn’t intended to strike fear at God as judge, nor to convey that we’re being stalked. Rather, the psalmist assures us that when our eyes are closed and we’re looking for God, God is present, ready to deliver us from our troubles.

Siblings, that is good news. We have The Creator of the universe waiting for us to give the signal that we’re ready to be rescued. Plus we have the assurance that no matter where we go, God sees us, God will answer us, and God will deliver us.

I also love the fact that the psalmist says we are delivered from all our fears. Even when the enemy is within, gnawing at our minds, God is prepared to rescue us from despair, hopelessness and fear. All we have to do is call. Is it time to allow God to ‘see’ us?

Point to Ponder

Please listen to the psalm in full, and allow the words to speak directly to us about God’s presence with us.

May all we seek be found in Christ
