“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” Galatians 5:13 NLT
Not only are we called to live; but we are granted freedom. This is a big deal when we consider the many who are in bondage – some of whom are regular readers of this devotion. Because you see, many of us buy into the lie which suggests that things define identity and stuff keeps the issues at bay.
The thing is, while evil exists, it’s often a result of selfishness. And in our human selfishness, others are hurt. Thus we are sometimes the perpetrators or the victims of selfishness. And living in the freedom born of Christ means we live not only for ourselves, but also for the world. So we consider the impact of our actions on others, especially those who are in bondage. We might not actively harm others but it may be the trigger that deforms or transforms. Just as the actions of others have the potential to influence our behavior.
Christ lived in total freedom. In His most human moment, He faced a serious crossroads – the way of the Cross or His momentary desire to live for Himself. Many of those for whom He died were absolutely ungrateful. He truly could have said no to death because of us ingrates. But He chose us. And by so doing served us Abundant Life on a platter called salvation.
Even when it feels like the ultimate sacrifice, our act of loving service won’t repay Christ’s gift. But it might save another’s life!
