The business of spiritual maturity is critical in the nurture of a growing Christian. Many times, it requires the ability to “walk chalk line” with the younger believer. And that kind of gift comes only with the intervention of the Holy Spirit.
Here’s hoping we’re able to sense that touch in today’s Holy Nougat™
When Priscilla and Aquila heard him preaching boldly in the synagogue, they took him aside and explained the way of God even more accurately. Acts of the Apostles 18:26 NLT
Who would we have been in that frozen moment – the knowledgeable Aquila/Priscilla, the zealous preacher, the unmentioned congregant or the equity unmentioned know-it-all saint? If we are the older saint, it is my hope we are like Priscilla and Aquila.
One surmises that Apollos (the unnamed ‘him’ in the story) was a very enthusiastic, if not well-trained believer. And, for all intents and purposes he might not have been in possession of complete facts.
Perhaps we all have had moments when we needed to take a leaf out of Aquila and Priscilla’s books in handling potentially embarrassing situations. Rather than challenge the young believer’s zeal or call him out on what he didn’t know; they offered gentle correction. Nor did they remain silent and allow him to keep spouting faulty theology (I suspect that Apollos much appreciated the instruction away from his congregation’s hearing).
I’m remembering with tender joy the quality training provided by one of our pastors to us as youth. Rev (God rest his soul) met with us prior to Sunday’s service to rehearse; and offered constructive criticism. He then provided quiet individual feedback after the service. What encouragement for our super sensitive egos!
May those who follow be so guided by us through the power of the Holy Spirit.
