A quick trip past London’s Stock Exchange saw me being shown the building from which a broker once committed suicide. I couldn’t fathom his decision, but realised that ironically, he has since been replaced. Serious chewing for today’s Holy Nougat™
“So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus— Acts of the Apostles 1:21 NLT
Despite Judas’s death being work-related (being a disciple was his full-time occupation; and – like the broker – his life ended when he was no longer able to cope with work-related decisions he had made), and in spite of being accused of petty theft by John; when the disciples regrouped his presence was missed. This has some implications for us in community:
1) Even the most ‘reprobate’ among us has a place and a purpose. Thus, we ought to consider whether God’s purpose is being fulfilled through our own lives. And we ought to be open to God’s plan for someone’s life before we cast them aside [Please seriously consider seeking God to direct us in ensuring that everyone walks according to God’s purpose within our communities, i.e. seek revelation for how to work with the misfits (including ourselves, if that’s the case)].
2) Judas was not indispensable. Neither are we. But Judas’s death created a void which none of his immediate colleagues could fill. Perhaps that would have been extra responsibility, or lack of fiscal knowledge … but our work must be of such quality that others cannot easily replace us, or assume our duties when it’s time go. [Succession planning is critical, but not to the detriment of our own job security]
3) The decision to look amongst the seventy would result in a door being opened for someone in Judas’s extended circle. It is instructive that we know the people around us. We must know what others do, so when there is a need we might be able to discern who might be recommended.
4) Conversely, let us be so aware of what is happening around us so that when there IS work to be done, we are amongst those immediately considered for the task/s. That includes being attuned to market trends (Word/Note to self) and being so open to the move of the Holy Spirit in our lives, Who creates vacancies for us in unexpected situations.
