Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.” “Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.” 1 Samuel 16:11 NLT
Talk about divine favour!
Samuel’s dictum, “we won’t eat” is some serious business, yes. For, hospitality required that the guest be offered refreshment upon arrival; and the time it would take for David to be found and presented to Samuel could threaten the bounds of hospitality, as well as the natural urges for food and drink. David was not included in the line-up presented by the patriarch Jesse before the prophet Samuel. In short, he was not deemed eligible by those around him for whatever it was that God was planning. Assuming that Jesse had even the slightest inkling that the Anointed One would be later crowned king, David was DEFINITELY not a contender.
At the time of the meeting with Samuel, David would have been in his teenage years, not even old enough to be conscripted in the military (nor old enough to take on a man’s responsibility [remember that shepherding was woman’s work or that consigned to slaves /servants. It was smelly and time-consuming among other things]). With seven older brothers, David was not in line to inherit much from his father, beyond a few sheep and his brothers actually considered him an afterthought.
But ours is a God who sees in us what no one else may be willing or able to acknowledge. And ultimately, that is what really matters. For, when the time comes for us to be re-positioned; nothing and no one can thwart the plans of God.
