The Worry Accomplishment
So what really does worry accomplish? We all should really be able to record those benefits blindfolded, as worry has become inextricably ingrained in our lives. And yet, for many of us, we are unable to identify an answer.
In a hilarious, yet serious sermon preached years ago in Jamaica, the pastor challenged us by asking, “Why pray when we can Worry?” He suggested that we give more time to worry than prayer, so perhaps worrying ought to have been that which Jesus instructed us to do. And then he nearly switched gears, directing us on the validity of looking to ‘the Hills’ for our help. And for the record, he meant God, not the person or place.
But back to Worry … It has the potential to
- Transform molehills into mountains, blackheads into carbuncles and inches into miles
- Deprive the worrier and mobilize them into becoming a sleep-deprived mutterer, who is so preoccupied with worry, there’s little room for sleep
- Build mistrust when the worrier seeks ulterior motives for the source of her/his quandary
- Reduce the quality of one’s spiritual life, as focus shifts from God’s problem-solving abilities to self; also reducing the willingness to pray and let go
- Solve nothing; for worry is often a mental exercise, accompanied by limited action or shift in circumstances
This is by no means a comprehensive list, but I believe I can safely say, despite the number of quality time we dedicate to worrying (often over things outside our control), worrying is really NOT a VAP (Value-added Pastime).
But Prayer is
Perhaps it’s time to shift priorities. Let’s not worry about it. Just begin to pray okay.
