Sometimes we are caught in seasons where we have no clear sense of direction and God’s voice seems silent. Today’s Holy Nougat offers a strategy for reflection.
“When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?”” Joshua 5:13 NLT
Joshua was a warrior. He was also in enemy territory. Meeting a man with drawn sword in open space prior to conflict must have been disconcerting. At least a little.
Enough to trigger the question about the warrior’s allegiance. For Joshua knew that the warrior’s response would guide his next action. Joshua’s eyes were downcast prior to seeing the warrior, it is likely that Joshua would not take his eyes off the warrior without knowing his intent.
How do we approach life? Do we face it by drawing conclusions without getting the facts; do we move forward, oblivious to the potential for danger round and about? Do we face threat head on; asking questions, sifting through the ‘facts’ to discern the way forward; or seek divine guidance prior to responding?
Joshua is not presented as a man of continuous prayer. But there is no doubt that God was with him. And in times of crisis, had no qualms about seeking God’s face. Nevertheless, on seeing the warrior, Joshua chose to engage him before prayer.
Interesting
It is import to be in sync with God’s plans. Equally important is the need to be attuned to the moment.
Perhaps God’s silence in our seasons serve to remind us that God also trusts us to make wise decisions. Whatever; rather however we move forward; let it be with the confidence of divine accompaniment that gives us courage.
