Hello
Sometimes we marvel at the reasons why folks are unwilling to commit to faith. Today’s Holy Nougat might be one of those.
“But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.” Matthew 19:22 NLT
As indicated yesterday, this young man had vocalized his interest in salvation to Jesus. Some of us might question his motives or intentions based on this response and his actions, and within the wider context, one realizes that it is a fair concern.
Within the broader scope of the text, Jesus is addressing matters of the heart in relationship with God. Thus when the young man starts asking about what he ought to DO to inherit God’s kingdom; Jesus engages him on a slightly different level.
This young man loved his neighbors – those within his socio-economic circle. In fact, he even claimed to love them to the extent that he loved himself. He was a man of integrity – no lies, he didn’t steal and he honored his parents. But . . .
. . . He was challenged by the idea of SHARING his wealth with the poor. While we are not given the full reason for his anguish, one can safely conclude that he did not see the poor as his neighbors.
The issue is; Love – whether human or divine – is more than mere routine. Love requires investment in the other, humility, compassion and sacrifice; even if it is one-sided. When we love, we do so, with the recognition that the one whom we love might not be equally invested in the relationship. And that should not be a criterion for our love.
For some of us, giving to others in need is not the threat to our salvation. It may lie elsewhere. Being honest with ourselves about our spiritual incompleteness gets us closer to attaining grace. Especially when we are open to God’s transformation of the sinful nature.
May God’s searchlight lead us to truth as we seek to be more like Christ.
In Christ’s love and grace . . .
