Hi

There is a popular saying in Jamaica, well it used to be popular back in MY day, that a promise is a comfort to a fool. Many of us would agree when someone leaves us in the lurch we kinda feel some of that. And, if we get let down often enough, we run the risk of trusting no one – not even God.

But what about our own promises – including our promises to God? Are those as solid as they ought? Consider today’s Holy Nougat; where a promise was rashly made …

“Peter said, “Lord, I am ready to go to prison with you, and even to die with you.”” Luke‬ ‭22:33‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I sincerely believe that Peter truly meant those words when uttered. And based on his temperament; I am confident that Peter truly meant those words. Yet, some time later, he reneged on the promise albeit indirectly. Moreover, he also acted on it after the ascension. (For we may recall that Jesus prophesied/predicted Peter’s death and the horrific nature of it all).

But before we judge Peter, let us remember that we also tend to make rash promises to God. And in the course of the making; we also are intent on keeping them. Oftentimes; we renege on them. Or, we go to the other extreme and delay making any commitment to God, for fear we won’t keep them.

Either action challenges what we determine to be a solid foundation for a good relationship. Despite our actions, the marvelous news is that God still loves each of us – you and I. And God will extend the loving restoration to us, already has and only awaits our acceptance of the gift.

How then do we respond, and will we also extend grace for broken promises?

In Christ’s love and grace . . .
