In the Akan tradition, the Sankofa bird has its head turned backwards with a golden egg in its beak, while the feet point forward. One theory implies that it means we go back to get that which is (important and) at risk of being left behind.

This could prove a useful tool in times of despair, if praise is that golden egg for which we return. Consider today’s Holy Nougat™️

“But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!” Jeremiah‬ ‭9:24‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Sometimes, identifying God’s unfailing Love is not very easy. When we lose a loved one to death, or – worse yet – mental/physical/sexual trauma or disappearance, seeing God’s hand, God’s love or even God’s righteousness is not easy.

Yet, in some situations, we are still able to find hope. To see God at work in our lives despite the debilitating events. Whether fleeting or long term, we recognize that God’s Spirit has not left us, but is with us through it all. It may be a word of comfort from an unexpected source. Or a miracle that manifests which could only be God. Or being embraced in a way that points to God cradling, protecting and comforting during the storm (or in the aftermath). We probably can remember some such moment in our lives.

So when the rough patch returns, we become like the sankofa bird – we return to the memories of God’s sustenance and provision, and carry the praises on our lips till it reaches our hearts. And at that point, we may find our souls once again able to boast in the Lord.

No, the path of faith isn’t easy – it wouldn’t be faith if it were. When fortified with praise and thanksgiving we find ourselves focusing on our Source, rather than the challenge. Our faith is strengthened and we are able to encourage ourselves and others along the way.

May our souls find our boast in God today.

In Christ’s love and grace . . .
