Nougat 2

As a child, I was always fascinated by the conductor of an orchestra. It sometimes felt like they had octopus hands. The same can be said of a choir director, but sometimes their teams require far fewer instructions and the conductor also guides the instrumentation of the piece. My walk with Jesus as well as my understanding of the Spirit of God often inclines me to think of the orchestra. Perhaps today’s Holy Nougat might have a similar impact.

“It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.” 1 Corinthians 12:11 NLT

Whether musical greats like (Beethoven or Bach), or a local undiscovered songwriters; composers write for public consumption. Using various notes, rests and other symbols are strategically placed on a musical score to create specific sound effects. Afterwards, any conductor with musical knowledge may take the score, interpret and assign voices and instruments to bring the composition to life. A good conductor either auditions persons for the various parts – voice and instruments – to create the smooth flow we hear when the concerto begins.

It is very easy for me to see our Triune God in this manner; where we are the performers and God is Conductor and Composer of God’s very own eternal Symphony. Having created us, there is no need to have an audition as God is fully familiar with the gifts and skills designed for each of us even before we were born (see Jeremiah 1:5). What God’s Spirit does is take God’s Symphony, share the score with us and highlight our individual and collective gifts for the roles cast for us. I wish to suggest that when we accept the existence of God’s role in our lives; God’s Spirit has greater opportunity to work with and through us.

Thus, we may prefer to sing; but we may in one scenario of God’s Life Symphony be scripted for instrumentals. Or be in rest mode. We are equally important to God’s grand symphony. Or we may yet be unaware of our role, and God’s Spirit is already calling us in to be our best selves in tune with God’s score.

Our role then, is not to audition others or direct the voices or instruments; rather it is to read the score and obey the Conductor. Can we see God’s Spirit moving rapidly, turning pages and highlighting voices and parts? Hopefully, we’re able to hear the sweet music God’s Spirit is making as directed by the Conductor.
