Nougat 17

Do you remember the movie ‘Ghostbusters’?( It was one of the first movies I watched in a cinema). While I can’t recall the entire story line, I remember that the team weren’t always prepared for some of what they encountered. And the refrain, ‘I ain’t scared of no ghost’ was not always indicative of the truth. That thought crossed my mind when reading today’s Holy Nougat

“But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.”” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭17:7‬ ‭NRSV‬‬

You see, Jesus and His disciples were on the mountain and he took the Three away with Him. During that away time; Peter, James and John had perhaps their most startling Jesus experience ever. In front of their very eyes, Jesus became True Light of ALL Lights and His real glory was revealed even further by the visit of two long departed saints – Moses and Elijah. I am not surprised that it after some time it brought them to their knees.

However, I am uncertain what took them there – the Awe-FULLNESS of what they had witnessed; the shock of seeing the long-departed; the abrupt disappearance of Elijah and Moses, OR the fact that they lived having seen Jesus in ALL His Godly glory. Each of those could have played a part in their response (we only have to think of Peter’s initial reaction). But my hope is, they were struck by the glory of Jesus, the recognition that Jesus truly was more than just another human.

And that’s my prayer for each of us in this season. Whether we agree with the birth celebrations or the secular festivities at this time; we should be agreed on the fact of Jesus’ earthly birth. And that is critical to our Faith. The fact of His becoming as we are to restore us to our likeness to God. But NEVER can we opt to forget Jesus’ Divinity. For it is His Divinity that saved us. Many men have died for others. None but One returned from Death having died for others. And none, being Resurrected and Ascended, have chosen to intercede on our behalf.

We often celebrate the Baby, we rejoice and celebrate the King, we marvel at the Resurrected One; but do we seek to see Jesus Christ in ALL His Glory? When we do, I suspect we might find ourselves declaring, ‘I ain’t scared of no ghost’ (whether problem, demons, or even people); and also prostrating ourselves in worship and reverence of Christ our Lord.

O Come! Let us adore Him
