Nougat 26

Have you ever thought about God’s features – hair/no hair, eyes, hands, feet, etc? Today’s Holy Nougat™️ takes us on that journey.

“The eyes of the Lord watch over those who do right; his ears are open to their cries for help.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭34:15‬ ‭NLT‬‬

I know, the temptation is to focus on how big God’s eyes must be to watch over us all. But, there’s a sense in which we have internalized the understanding of Imago Dei (made in God’s likeness) by ascribing human attributes to God. I can’t imagine God without eyes; because my limited brain can only see eyes as the unit of sight. And for God to have made all God has made, then God’s got eyes. It stands to reason therefore that since God’s got eyes, God’s watching over us.

And though I can’t explain how God does it, I know that we are always under God’s watchful jurisdiction. It’s not ‘from a distance’ as one songwriter proposed (implying that God’s vision is distorted and biased); at least not in that sense. Rather, God’s watch over us is like a laser-drone-birds’ eye view kind of watching; with a right beside us, personal element. For, in my perspective of God, God sees very clearly, precisely and 3-Dimensionally all at the same time. Like birds of prey which can spot their prey from many miles away, God sees the cells hidden away in our bodies just as clearly as God sees anyone or anything that threatens us. Unlike the bird of prey however, God’s seeking us out to protect us, not for dinner.

But God not only sees and watches over us; God hears us too. And being God, God’s hearing is supersonic (okay, okay, supernatural). I used supersonic, as it describes activity that progresses faster than the speed of sound; or sound waves beyond human hearing abilities. I imagine it to be like a mother seals finding her pup in a colony of seals based only on its sound; or recognizing a distress call as faint as it may be.

God knows all humanity. From personal creative knowledge. So recognizing us in- dividually is far easier than if we tried to recognize people with whom we had little or no contact. And, because God has a vested interest in our lives; God is very keen on protecting us, preparing us and perceiving even our unspoken cries; and responding in a timely manner. For God is God.

We may have experienced disappointment at God’s response to our cries or to past danger; so much so that our willingness to believe God’s promise is low. And that’s fine. Because God, whose eyes can see every cell of our body – good and bad ones alike – even sees our spiritual hearts. You may think it’s conjecture, like our humanifying God to grasp God’s God-ness; but it’s also my experience. It could also be yours.

I propose that we invite God to address our heart-faith concerns and watch (from our flat human perspective) how God reveals God’s self to us. More importantly I challenge us to ask God to help us see where God was at work in our most painful moments. I pray healing grace for each of us; from our God Who sees and hears and watches over us clearly, precisely and in 3D.

May all we seek be found in Christ
