Nougat 11

Today’s Holy Nougat could be titled, ‘The statement that sparked consternation.’

“When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going.” “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”” ‭‭John‬ ‭14‬:‭3‬-‭5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

What happens when you think you know your audience then you realize that they are not with you? I feel Jesus often looked back at the moment and shook His head. For who’d expected a response like that from Thomas? It seems incongruous with our romantic notions of perfect life with the disciples.

But we’re not much better, are we? I suspect we’ve had moments when we questioned God about the strangest little things also. Just think, from when you made you vows to Jesus until now; some things just might be embarrassing. Olive Aenior, Caribbean short story writer has one where the child in Sunday school (not so) innocently asked, ’Do angels wear brassieres’? In one sense, it is a valid question which invites consideration on gender equality etc; but on another sense could be seen as totally irrelevant and inappropriate.

So back to the issue – Given Who Jesus was, and the fact that Thomas was a disciple, his question is shocking. Yet, the teaching of the time might have suggested that Heaven was unattainable; or worse yet – Thomas had not accepted Jesus’ divinity. It almost makes me hope it was the former. For, if Thomas had recognized Jesus as the Son of God, he would have known where Jesus was going.

More importantly, do we know the answer to Thomas’s question? Do we truly know Who Jesus is, and where He has gone? And if we do, are we ready to join Him there?
