How often do you eat Bread and what is its value to you? Here’s today’s Holy Nougat™️

“Jesus replied, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will

never be thirsty.” ‭‭John‬ ‭6‬:‭35‬ ‭NLT‬‬

In most cultures around the world, there is some kind of staple that would qualify as bread. Sourdough, whole wheat, rice cake, cassava, tortilla, pita, baguette, johnny cakes, wraps, rolls, naan, bammie … you name it, there’s something that is not just breakfast matter, but basic sustenance all round.

Bread was also a Bible times staple. Wars were averted by gifts of bread (see David and Abigail’s story in 1 Samuel 25). Joshua was deceived by stale bread (see Joshua 9). God mollified the Children of Israel with a bread-like grain, manna (see Numbers 11). Bread and oil were included in sacrificial rituals at the altar ( see Leviticus 24).

Jesus’ first recorded temptation included bread (Matthew 4). He fed the vast multitude of 5,000+ by multiplying the reach of 5 loaves (John 6, immediately before this segment). And, as part of the model prayer He offered to us through the disciples, Jesus indicated that we have the authority to ask for supply of our basic needs, ‘Give us today our daily bread …’ Truly, bread was a staple in the biblical narratives.

To declare Himself then as Bread of Life means Jesus understood Himself to be the One Essential element to satisfy our needs. I almost said spiritual, but we realize that bread was not only used in spiritual or ceremonial ways. As the Bread of Life, Jesus is the staple that carries us through the wilderness; the sign of peace when conflict is to be averted, the common denominator recognized all over the world, the multiplier effect in the face of lack or adversity. Jesus is hospitality to the stranger, the proof of devotion to our Deity, and in these days, might even be considered currency.

And, most of all – as Bread of Life; Jesus offers those who believe life with Him in eternity. Is Jesus your Bread of Life?

May all we seek be found in Christ
