“Do to others as you would like them to do to you.” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭31‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We live in a world that is very often self absorbed, and where self gratification is the order of the day. Hence, Jesus’ call for us to love others with the same intensity as we do for ourselves was, and still is, radical. A lighthearted example:

A father and his young son were at an event away from home. There was a nice multi-layered cake on the dessert table and they were filled with anticipation, for they both spotted a special slice. They nervously watched each person select their dessert.

Imagine the father’s surprise when the son took the special slice. It’s the son’s attitude that saved the day. Before taking the licks from his dad he suggested that he was only eating the slice he was due. His rationale included role-reversal trapping his dad into saying that he, the father, would have taken the small slice. Was that cheeky, self-absorbed or loving our neighbor?

As the world gathers in Qatar, we are often unaware that there are often increased cases of human trafficking. It’s ideal – large crowds of strangers who are not always aware of such dangers. Most of the persons involved in the process of trafficking others are only concerned with their ‘bottom line’.

We hear stories of human rights being violated and determine that it’s not our concern. But instead of being our siblings’ keepers, we are concerned about our own ‘bottom lines’. There are women and girls undergoing lots of abuse at the hand of ‘good, righteous’ souls. We turn a blind eye and sometimes tacitly (consciously) aid and abet the perpetrators. This is totally contrary to God’s plan for humanity.

If we’re part of the problem, we need to repent. If not, then let’s explore Godly solutions to these challenges. Moreover, I pray we value ourselves enough that we would seek God’s best for our lives and in turn, for others. That’s God’s prescription for all creation. May we be successful in doing for, and valuing others as we do for ourselves.

May all we seek be found in Christ
