If: a conjunction (a phrase connector) that places a particular condition for an outcome – real or imagined. If introduces possibilities and potential, usually with some incentive or disincentive for that matter. eg if you eat your veggies you’ll be healthy and strong.

When: a conjunction that defines a clear outcome, a sure thing; a guarantee. It presents as fact eg when the World Cup is over, only one team will have the 2022 title.

On seeing ‘when’ and ‘if’ in the Bible, it is important that we pause to consider context. Who is speaking, What is being said, Where and When it’s said? For, the subject of the statement also suggests how concrete the outcome will be.

That said, we note that this nougat we’re chewing on is replete with ‘when’s’, 3 to be precise. And all three statements are coming directly from God. Given God’s reputation for creating and knowing us, I believe it is safe to reckon that God’s when is sure. Which can be solace or discomfort. It’s also grounds for preparing for what will come.
