““O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you!” Jeremiah 32:17 NLT
What might be hard for God, is facing our unbelief and ingratitude. For it must be difficult to see and hear the extent to which we humans lose faith in God’s ability to complete what God’s already started. Beyond that, it really is within God’s power to do and be.
Just think: since the beginning God’s been creating, and most of that, merely by speaking. Genesis 1 tells us that as it was conceived by God, it was spoken into being. That is not the action of one who is impotent. And right in that same creation span, humanity was created, and given the power to also create.
Doubting God’s capabilities is thus denying God’s sovereignty and creativity. For if God is incapable of being and doing, then what is God’s function. Psalm 53:1-2 captures the issue succinctly: only fools say in their hearts there is no God. And failure to recognize God’s capacity, is also our failure to acknowledge God’s existence.
So we might find ourselves thinking about those moments when God clearly didn’t do – how do we reconcile God’s capacity and sovereignty. Let’s remember that the power of Choice is originally God’s. To set the order of creation demanded choices. And those choices were made in light of the big picture. Thus all humanity needs for basic survival was created before humanity was, suggesting that we are part of God’s Big Picture. That’s confirmed by the blessing accorded us in verses 26 onwards. Yet that only becomes clear at the end of the process. Can it be that which God fails to do or stop is part of a bigger picture?
I suspect it is. So let’s try to understand God’s process and yield to God’s Big Picture.
