What is your greatest desire? Please consider today’s Holy Nougat

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭37‬:‭4‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Before delving into our reflection too deeply, we mote that our hearts desires refers to that for which our inner self yearns. It’s the things we want above all else. The idea of delighting in God in exchange for our hearts’ desires may seem self-serving, yet there is a sense in which our love of God in response to God’s Love is exactly that. Further, the caveat of our delight in God indicates that even if our motives are impure, we are called to a relationship of Love.

Interestingly, we find that when we ‘delight ourselves in the Lord’ our waking, sleeping thoughts are consumed by the love of and love for Christ. In short, our hearts’ desire is Jesus! No, it’s not preposterous; nor is it a bait and switch; but ultimately we have a God-sized space in our hearts that constantly yearns for Jesus.

Moreover, when Jesus is our hearts’ desire our priorities may undergo a shift. For then we are fixated on material ‘things’. As our relationship with Jesus progresses, we may realize that God’s already got them sorted. Not always in the way we expect, nevertheless sorted with our best interest already factored in. When we do accept that reality, we will find that our need is simply to please God Who desires to provide for us, and Who yearns for intimacy with all humanity. Pleasing God, through deeper intimacy and obedience to God’s ways, then becomes our hearts’ desire.

Yes, we might yearn for the material and for spiritual gifts, but we will find that those aren’t our hearts’ desire. As means to the end, they will also be provided, but we know that God has already supplied our needs out of God’s surplus wealth (see Philippians 4:19).
