So having completed our reflections, I went to WhatsApp to copy the lovely poem written for our consideration by Asenath Scott, and discovered that Google (ie Gmail) had simply erased everything I’d written.
Thankfully, I had access to the poem; so here’s our reflection for this Good Friday:
TAUNTED TO GET DOWN.
Beaten, whipped, spat upon, nailed onto a wooden cross.
The day that criminals were crucified on the hill of Golgotha.
The one on the middle cross was Jesus of Nazareth.
His crime was innocence.
His trial was mock.
His punishment was a curse.
Cursed is one who hangs upon a tree. That was He!
Bleeding from hands feet and side.
Naked as soldiers took his robe and gambled for it.
The highest bidder went away with a seamless treasure.
Taunted by the thief beside Him to get down, Jesus stayed put and was taken down even before the taunting thief had died.
Jesus resisted calling angels to rescue,
He knew that His death was swallowed up in victory.
His mother Mary’s care was given to John his brother, who took responsibility of her.
It is finished was the last statement made.
Jesus the man of sorrows and acquainted with grief had completed the work that was assigned to Him.
No taunts could alter the trajectory.
Just as Jonah was swallowed by the fish.
For three days Jesus would lay in the grave.
Thanks be to God the Father who received Him back to Heaven.
Task completed, resurrection secured, alive forevermore. New day has dawn, it is Easter morn.
Christ the Lord, Victor over death and the Grave.
Here’s Todays Holy Nougat
“Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who had been crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs.” John 19:32-33 NRSV
