In some spaces where I interact, it is not uncommon to hear persons speak of what they hear from God. In other spaces, this is not a common occurrence. These matter when we face life’s challenges. Let’s reflect on hearing God as we consider Today’s Holy Nougat.

Deuteronomy 3:2 CEVDCI

[2] But the Lord told me, “Moses, don’t be afraid of King Og. I am going to help you defeat him and his army and take over his land. Destroy him and his people, just as you did with the Amorite King Sihon of Heshbon.”

Hearing God

Hearing God isn’t always about an audible voice from Heaven. In fact there are times when God isn’t an audible voice, yet we’re still hearing God. This may happen for example, as we read scripture, participate in Bible studies, or observe nature.

Self-Check

In what ways do we hear from God?

Deeper Dive

It is difficult to think that there are believers today who don’t hear from God. In a given moment perhaps there’s silence. But we hope that we hear from God because we maintain a healthy relationship. If we think of Elijah in the cave, Saul in his pre-Damascus life, or even Nicodemus; we find that hearing God requires us being willing to reframe our focus. That is, away from misconceptions or problems and toward God.

There are times when God is silent. However silence doesn’t necessarily mean that we can’t hear God. Silence may be louder than a megaphone. Just ask Elijah (1 Kings 19), who heard God in that inner whisper. For Moses, it began with fire and then became an audible voice (Exodus 3).

How do we react when we can’t hear God? Do we feel forsaken, or do we perform internal checks and balances? Could it be that we aren’t listening for God’s voice? Could it be that anxiety affects our capacity to hear God speak? Or do we listen to other voices instead of God’s voice?

Point to Ponder

What is our go-to in life’s stressful moments? Do we listen for God’s voice, are we problem solving in our corners, or are we zeroed in on our burdens?

May all we seek be found in Christ
