My mom was a dedicated teacher. Whether in the classroom or not, she had a lesson hidden somewhere. We learned addition and subtraction as we ate our snacks – as she and my dad took us through the motions of ‘Ship Sail’. Our after-dinner time included local ring games, or others such as, ‘I am in a well ‘. That’s the one on which I’m reflecting, as we consider Today’s Holy Nougat.
Exodus 14:13-14 CEB
[13] But Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand your ground, and watch the LORD rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never ever see again.
[14] The LORD will fight for you. You just keep still.”
Watch God Fight
For those of you who don’t know or remember ‘I am in a well’, it’s fairly simple. Everyone surrounds one person by forming a ring.
The person in the middle says, ‘I am in a well’. The ring responds, ‘How deep is it’? The one tells them an imaginary depth; then the ring asks, ‘Who would you like to take you out?’
As the person answers by calling the name of someone in the ring, the ring further probes, ‘With a what’?
The game gets very interesting as the one in the well might ask the rescuer to spell a word, do a simple math question, or possibly some other activity. If the action is done successfully, they switch roles. Otherwise, another rescuer is sought, and the game continues.

Deeper Dive
So often, we find ourselves in a well (hopefully not literally) and in need of rescue. In those moments, I hope the implicit lessons my mom taught us stay with you:
– It is fine to ask for help.
– Know what the problem is
– Select the expert with the right equipment
I’m light of our Nougat, we realize that whenever we need to, we can cry out to God. Sometimes, we might not even know the dimensions of our trouble, but God does. As the expert, God is fully qualified to take us out and has taken our place through Jesus Christ. And these days, we get a clear Three-in-One deal. For God’s Spirit accompanies us.
For me, that’s what it means for God to fight for us. Or, as we often say, Lord, take the case and give me the pillow. Watch God fight for us – the battle is already tipped in God’s favour.
