Psalms 119:18 NIV
[18] Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.
Wonderful Things
I am convinced siblings, that the psalmist’s words offer us a reminder that we can please God with the little things. Obedience, time in the Word, prayer, generosity, praise. It begins with a desire to love God more.
Self-Check
How do we demonstrate our love for God most of the time?
Application
We note the psalmist’s request. The desire is for clear vision to grasp the nuances of God’s Word. His desire reveals why David was considered by God to be a man after God’s own heart (see 1 Samuel 13:14). David’s passion for God is exemplary. Using the Jewish 22-letter alphabet as an acrostic, from Aleph to Tav, David poured out his love for God and God’s Word in Psalm 119. Even as he poured out his love to God, David’s desire was to understand God more as he read God’s word.
That was the reason behind his request for open eyes. David sought his own personal relationship with God at a time when individuals were often satisfied with representational worship. David found God’s Laws wonderful. He delighted in being with God and reading about God.
Interestingly, that’s God’s desire for each of us. I believe that God would love that we earnestly sought God for God’s sake and that we genuinely find joy in studying God’s Word. God truly wants each of us to deepen our intimacy with God.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus reminds us to prioritise a deepened relationship with God, as it yields all else that we could desire. However, I suggest that we should not do so for the perks, wonderful as they are. Let’s love God for God’s sake … as our Creator Who first loved us. In pleasing God, we seek to know God through God’s Word, where we will discover wonderful truths about God and ourselves.
Today, let’s complement our alphabet praise with a request to God for open eyes and a deeper relationship.
Point to Ponder
Is there any portion of scripture that we need more clarity on? Like David, let’s ask God to open our eyes.
